Abstract:

This paper presents a comparative view of the training of economists in five countries of Latin America, analyzing curricula, textbooks currently used, professors’ full or part-time status, teaching methods and the use of computers. The paper additionally reports the results of a survey of students pursuing degrees in economics in order to obtain a socioeconomic profile of those students and to capture their opinions and attitudes. Among the patterns found in the five countries, particularly notable is the disconnect between students’ expectations of the labor market and the actual demand for economists in several sectors of the economy.
