What candidate profiles is the IDB currently looking for?

Among the principal areas of expertise currently needed are: social development specialists, natural resources specialists, infrastructure specialists, finance specialists, and economists.


What is the time limit for submitting an application?

Applications are accepted until the closing date advertised on the vacancy announcement on the website.


How do I apply for a job at the IDB?

Fixed-term contracts and special programs for young professionals: Vacancies are advertised on the Bank’s website and applications to these vacancies are submitted through our online application system.  An acknowledgement of receipt is sent out upon receipt of the application. Please note that the recruitment procedure may take up to a couple of months or more.

Consultant positions, temporary help, trust fund appointments, and research fellows: Bank Departments, Country Offices and Independent Units of the Bank will be responsible for selection, negotiation, and preparation of contract requests, which are submitted to Human Resources Department’s Technical Group on Consulting Services. The hiring of Contractual Employees and Research Fellows is at the discretion of the Division Chiefs, Representatives and/or Managers.


How many staff positions does the IDB fill each year?

In total, the IDB fills approximately 200 staff positions each year.


Do you have offices around the world?  Do you recruit for these offices?

The IDB’s main Headquarters is located in Washington, D.C., specifically 1300 New York Avenue, N.W. Job opportunities for International positions at Headquarters and regional Offices are listed in our webpage. The IDB also has regional offices in 28 countries in Latin America, Europe and Japan. Recruitment for Local positions in these countries is handled by the office concerned. Only nationals from the country where the Local position is vacant is eligible to apply.


What languages are used at the IDB?

The official Bank languages are English, Spanish, French and Portuguese. Most positions require oral and written proficiency in English and at least one of the other official languages.


Are there any eligibility restrictions to apply?

Please note that you must be a citizen of one of the IDB’s member countries in order to qualify for any type of employment at the IDB. Candidates with relatives working at the IDB are not eligible to any type of employment. Further, employees must be U.S. citizens, U.S. residents or possess a valid G(4) visa provide by the Bank.


If I am not a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident, how do I get a G(4) visa to work at headquarters in Washington, DC?

At the request of the Bank, G(4) status is granted by the U.S. Department of State to Bank staff who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States, with the same visa status being granted to immediate family members who reside with the staff member. “Immediate family members” recognized by the U.S. Department of State for this purpose include spouse, unmarried children by birth or adoption, and parents or parents-in-law, if the latter meet certain conditions. Such immediate family members must reside regularly in the household and must be supported by the staff member.

The G(4) visa is obtained from a U.S. Consulate outside the United States prior to arrival at a point of entry to the U.S., and is issued normally for a period of one to four years, depending on the reciprocity arrangements between the U.S. and the country of citizenship.

It is important for the Bank to ascertain and document that the proper visa status was granted by the U.S. Immigration Officer upon arrival to U.S. territory of the staff member, family members and any domestic employee. For that purpose, the staff member will be requested to submit the passport(s) so that photocopies are made and kept as part of the official records of the Bank.

The G(4) visa is based upon employment with a specific international organization and, as such, limits employment in the U.S. to employment with the IDB.


Does the IDB provide relocation assistance and onboarding support?

For staff arriving from outside the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, the Bank provides a competitive relocation package that may include air transportation, shipment of household effects and automobile, payment in lieu of shipment, and incorporation allowances such as installation grant, travel grant, and settling-in grant.

The IDB has recently launched its Onboarding Program. Onboarding is the process of integrating new employees into their work environment. The process is designed to foster a positive experience from day one and to provide new employees with tools so that they can be fully productive as soon as possible. It starts once the candidate accepts the job offer and ends with the conclusion of the first working year.

 The Onboarding program has three main components:

  1. An automated system designed to provide relevant information and help new employees complete a series of tasks prerequisite to their start date
  2. An Onboarding Portal which contains information regarding the program and its phases. Detailed information include: objectives, process, description of key players, induction activities, information regarding mobility services as well as feedback assessment.
  3. Customized Onboarding training to new employees which is being developed in partnership with the Knowledge and Learning Sector (KNL) based on specific departmental business requirements.
