Luis Alberto Giorgio was appointed Chief of Staff of the IDB in July 2009. An Argentine citizen, he has a master’s degree in economics from the University of Minnesota, USA, and a Licenciatura in economics from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
He joined the Bank in 2001 as a Senior Financial Economist in the Sustainable Development Department. Subsequently, he held the positions of Senior Country Coordinator and Economist in the former Regional Operations Department 3, Advisor in the Vice Presidency for Sectors and Knowledge, and Advisor in the Office of the Presidency.
Before joining the IDB, Mr. Giorgio was Deputy Director General of the Centre for Latin American Monetary Studies (CEMLA) in Mexico City; he also worked at the Central Bank of Argentina where he held various positions, including Managing Director of the Centre for Monetary and Banking Studies (CEMYB) and Deputy Manager of the Office of Financing and Financial System Studies. In addition, he has advised and consulted on monetary and financial issues, among others, for the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank, the Government of Costa Rica, the Latin American Economic Research Foundation (FIEL), the Banking School of the University of Siena, Italy, and other Institutions.
In the academic realm, he was Professor of Microeconomics and Monetary Economics at the University of Buenos Aires and the University of Belgrano, in Argentina, and at Mexico’s Anahuac University and at the Autonomous Technology Institute of Mexico.
